In Missouri, more than 99 percent of businesses are small businesses and nearly half of Missouri employees come from small businesses. Small businesses are also at the core of Columbia. Local businesses are what make our community unique and help create a feeling of belonging.
During Small Business Week, the Columbia Chamber of Commerce puts the spotlight on some of the best small businesses in Columbia that are nominated for the Small Business of the Year award. Small Business of the Year finalists were selected by the Small Business committee from Chamber member submissions.
PedNet Coalition (“pedestrian and pedaling network”) is a nonprofit organization based in Columbia, Missouri. They work to build strong communities that are walkable, bikeable, accessible, and have thriving public transit systems. They also advocate for policies and infrastructure that ensure the transportation system is safe and convenient for everyone.
Heart of Missouri CASA (HOM CASA) was founded in 2005 and is part of a national network. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteers watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children to make sure they don’t get lost in the overburdened legal system or languish in an inappropriate group or foster home. Volunteers stay with each case until it is closed, and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For many children, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence—the one adult who cares only for their best interest.
Just Jeff’s is a Columbia’s famous mobile food vendor serving delicious food, made on-the-spot with fresh ingredients. There are now two permanent locations on the Business Loop and Green Meadows. Just Jeff’s specializes in on-the-go sandwiches like cheeseburgers, hamburgers, Vienna all-beef hot dogs, and homemade chili-cheese dogs. They are a Columbia staple and a must-stop for out of towners.

This year Small Business Week will occur from Oct. 5-8 to celebrate these small businesses and everything they give to our community. Activities throughout the week will include a series of free informative seminars presented by the five finalists and networking opportunities held both virtually and in-person.
The Small Business Week kick-off will be at Williams-Keepers on October 5th at 7:30 AM. At the end of the week, the Small Business of the Year winner will be announced at The Roof at the Broadway Hotel during a special award celebration. Both events will have virtual and in-person components.
