MEMBER NEWS

  • Taylor Burks has been appointed Boone County Clerk by Governor Eric Greitens. The position became vacant when long-term Boone County Clerk, Wendy S. Noren, resigned in June. Elections Manager Art Auer has been serving as Interim County Clerk. Burks was the Director of Distribution, Inventory and Asset Management at the University of Missouri System.
  • Students from the University of Missouri School of Medicine class of 2021 took their first steps toward becoming physicians during a White Coat Ceremony at Jesse Hall on the University of Missouri campus. The class of 2021 consists of 128 students. Of this class, 32 percent of students self-identified as an ethnic minority.  At the ceremony, the students were presented with their first white coats, the most common symbol of the medical profession for more than a century, in front of hundreds of their family members and friends.
  • Two University of Missouri Health Care physician assistants have been nationally recognized for earning a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in emergency medicine. Megan EuDaly, PA-C, and Jessica Godsey, PA-C, received certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by meeting licensure, experience and substantial medical education requirements.
  • Professionals from a wide spectrum of service providers across Boone County convened on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, to give insight during a League of Women Voters panel discussion entitled “Boone County’s Mental Health Crisis and the Need for Solutions.” Professionals representing law enforcement, the judicial system, health care, mental health care, veterans affairs, public health, housing, homeless shelters and re-entry services comprised the panel with a common goal of educating the community about the often concurrent problems of mental illness, homelessness and involvement with the criminal justice system. Covered topics include the prevalence of mental illness in jails; the cost of untreated mental illness to the
    community; the cyclical nature of mental illness and contact with the criminal justice system; services currently available in our community; and initiatives underway to address the problem and break the cycle.
  • Hawthorn Bank has signed an agreement on space for a new downtown Columbia banking center at 807 East Walnut, the bank’s chief operating officer Kathleen Bruegenhemke announced. According to Bruegenhemke, the bank will occupy the first two floors of the Plaza 807 Office Building when construction is complete in approximately 18 to 24 months.
  • Discovery Hotel’s and InterMountain Management are proud to announce the opening of the TownePlace Suites by Marriott Columbia, MO. This 96-suite hotel is located at 4400 Nocona Parkway and is the first phase of new development in the Discovery Park District which sits just steps away from Phillips Lake Park. This extended stay hotel is also just minutes away from either downtown Columbia or the Columbia Regional Airport and features clever design with touches of Missouri influences throughout the hotel. Each spacious suite offers fully equipped kitchen and flexible spaces which invites guests to relax and unwind. The Grand Opening Party will be held on Tuesday, October 10 from 4 – 7 p.m. with the ribbon cutting at 4:30 p.m. They will be offering a variety of door prizes including a $1,000 dollar gift card from the Container Store.
  • Boone County is reminding the public to call 9-1-1 for emergencies only and to call the non-emergency numbers 3-1-1 or 573-442-6131 for other situations requiring law enforcement attention, such as noise caused by fireworks or fireworks being discharged in prohibited areas. Remember: calling 9-1-1 when there is no emergency can prevent actual emergency calls from being connected in a timely manner and could delay emergency responders for someone who really needs help.

AWARDS, PROMOTIONS AND NEW HIRES

  • For the eighth year in a row, Boone County earned recognition for successful outcomes through the strategic use of information and communications technology. On Thursday, July 20, the Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties announced the top ten counties in each of five population categories, including Boone County, which ranked tenth place amongst counties with a population between 150,000 and 249,999.
  • Boone County has received a 2017 Achievement Award in the category of Children and Youth from the National Association of Counties for its Family Access Center of Excellence (FACE) program. The FACE program, as the recipient of an Achievement Award, was eligible to be selected as one of the 100 Brilliant Ideas at Work and was ultimately selected for this recognition on June 2, 2017. This designation recognizes Boone County as showcasing one of the best innovations in county government.
  • Central Bank of Boone County announces nine employee promotions made in June.
    • Colin Gardner and Abby Mora were promoted to teller II. Employees are hired as a teller I then, once they have completed their training and have had six months of successful experience, they are promoted to a teller II.
    • Kayla Wilkerson, Shomari Wellington and Elizabeth Jahns were promoted to financial associates. Financial associates not only act as customer service representatives who assist customers with all aspects of daily banking, from opening accounts and making deposits to applying for loans, but also can act as a teller when needed.
    • Drake Luebrecht was promoted to customer service representative and Gage Long was promoted to customer service representative II at the Customer Service Center. Customer service representatives at the Customer Service Center help customers with daily activities such as answering questions, solving problems, and assisting with a variety of online needs.
    • Ryan Bross and Chris Rosskopf were promoted to senior vice president, commercial loan officer at the Downtown Bank. Commercial loan officers develop and manage credit relations with individuals and businesses who seek a variety of loans.

Non-Profit News

  • Join The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri and the Missouri Tigers for a taste and experience event! Sample tailgate-inspired bites from local chefs, enjoy spirits and brews from Columbia’s favorite venues and experience unique on-field activities at Memorial Stadium. Part of the Missouri Tigers Score Against Hunger campaign, this event will include Mizzou Athletics personalities such as the Golden Girls, Truman and the “Voice of the Tigers” Mike Kelly. Raffle to win unique experiences, including activities with the Mizzou Tigers. The event will be on October 5, at the Memorial Stadium North Concourse from 5 – 8 p.m.
  • The Voluntary Action Center presented Christmas in July, an opportunity for low-income families and individuals to enjoy a picnic meal and for children to visit with Santa Claus, who had gifts for them. There were hundreds in attendance.
