Burrell Behavioral Health recognizes variety of staff milestones occurring in the last quarter.
Promotions
Burrell Behavioral Health and its parent company, Brightli, are pleased to announce Megan Steen, previously Burrell’s Vice President, Central Region, has been named to the new position of Chief Operating Officer, Central Region.
In her role Steen will oversee day-to-day operations for Brightli’s Central Region which encompasses 17 counties. This area includes programs and services of Burrell, where it serves as the state-designated Community Mental Health Center, as well as certain mental health and substance-use recovery services under the Preferred Family Healthcare umbrella in central Missouri.
“Megan is a proven executive with more than 10 years of experience in the field. Her promotion into the role of regional operations officer is a testament to her success as a leader and innovator in the community behavioral health space,” said Burrell Central Region President Mat Gass. “In this new role Megan will be able to further align our programs and services to meet the growing needs of the mid-Missouri community.”
Rachel Ballew was recently promoted to Director, Talent Acquisition. She joined Burrell in 2020. In this new role, Ballew will lead recruitment efforts for the organization’s Central Region.
Anniversaries
Several Burrell Central Region employees celebrated 15 years, or more, of service in the last quarter. Including Bryan Miller, School Based Liaison, 16 years; Carisa Kessler, Director, Crisis Services, 16 years; Megan Adams, ER Enhancement Specialist, 15 years; Tanya Watson, Community Support Specialist II, 15 years.
Certifications
Burrell’s Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) recently celebrated two central Missouri staff members who completed their Masters degrees; online from the Missouri State University School of Social Work. Congratulations to Brenna Ishler, Assistant Director, Adult Community Services, and Tanya Watson, Community Support Specialist II on achieving such a notable certification. Eligible Burrell employees receive $10,000 through TAP toward the cost of their Masters degree.
GQT Movies (Forum 8 in Columbia) has partnered with sponsor Healthy Blue to bring Sensory Friendly Movie Nights to Columbia. The Sensory Friendly Movie nights offer discounted movies, shown in a sensory-friendly format, to the community on the last Wednesday of the month from October 26th, 2022, through April 26th, 2023.
The series features several family-friendly films, such as Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and more!
“We are very excited to offer this special showing to our movie-goers with sensory needs, and we welcome Healthy Blue as our title sponsor whose generous support made this possible,” stated GQT Movies COO Matt McSparin. “We heard from a cross-section of our guests that this type of show was a want and need, so we listened. Junior Achievement in Central Missouri is kicking off their end-of-year giving campaign with a holiday happening: FREE Photos with Santa & Mrs. Claus on November 11th from 3pm until 8pm at Orr Street Studios.
Santa Chris has been the jovial man in red since 2017. He has appeared as the Head Elf at the Delmar Loop in St. Louis, done virtual visits during COVID in 2020 through Santa’s Club, Sam’s Club, and had the privilege to join the Disney Family in 2021 as one of their first Santa’s of Color. He was featured at Disney World Florida’s Disney Springs, Epcot, and on the flotilla at Animal Kingdom. He has the distinction to be a member in good standing with Lone Star Santas, IBRBS, Worldwide Santa Network, Santas of Color Network, Sons of the American Legion, an honorary member of Council For Unity. He and Mrs. Claus are both Junior Achievement alums.
Photos are free, but donations are welcome. A prize drawing for a Virtual Visit with Santa (6 tickets for $5) and a silent auction with prizes from local businesses will also be held. And there will be free cookies and cocoa for all…Santa insists!
Junior Achievement in Central Missouri serves Boone, Callaway, Cole, and 16 other surrounding counties. Junior Achievement’s mission is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed. JA is making the world a better place by preparing students for future success. They offer hands-on experiential learning programs for students in grades K-12. Each program is built upon the foundation of the JA Pathways: Financial Literacy, Work and Career Readiness, and Entrepreneurship. Volunteers deliver lessons and share their experience. In the process, these volunteers serve as role models helping to positively impact young people’s perceptions about the importance of education, as well as critical life skills.

Zimmer Communications Earns Three 2022 NAB Marconi Radio Awards
The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) announced the winners for the 2022 NAB Marconi Radio Awards, honoring radio stations and on-air personalities for excellence in broadcasting. The winners were announced on Wednesday at the Javits Center at NAB Show New York.
Two stations and one on-air personality from Zimmer Communications were all selected as award winners in their respective categories. The winners are:
- Y107 (KTXY) – CHR Station of the Year
- 96.7 KCMQ (KCMQ) – Rock Station of the Year
- Kristin Monica on Y107 – Small Market Personality of the Year
Additionally, one station and two on-air personalities from Zimmer Communications were all selected as finalists for the awards. The finalists are:
- 94.3 KAT Country (KATI) – Country Station of the Year
- Erin Hart on 94.3 KAT Country – Small Market Personality of the Year
- Liz and Scotty in the Morning on Clear 99 – Small Market Personality of the Year
“So excited and proud of our team!” said Zimmer Communications Director of Sales Carrie Berkbuegler. “There’s a lot of hard work that goes into what we do every day, but also a LOT of fun! It’s amazing we get recognized for all those things, it makes winning that much sweeter.”

Established in 1989 and named after inventor and Nobel Prize winner Guglielmo Marconi, the NAB Marconi Radio Awards are given to radio stations and outstanding on-air personalities to recognize excellence in radio. Marconi finalists were selected by a task force of broadcasters, and the winners were voted on by the NAB Marconi Radio Awards Selection Academy. The votes were tabulated by an independent firm.
Shelter Insurance® will be honoring Nino Fennoy with one of the company’s most prestigious awards. Shelter President and CEO, Randa Rawlins, will be presenting the Fred V. Heinkel Award of Excellence to Fennoy at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 24, at the Jackie Joyner Kersee Community Center (101 Jackie Joyner Kersee Circle, East St. Louis, IL).
Fennoy is a legendary high school girls track and field, and cross country, head coach in East St. Louis. He was the head coach of Lincoln High School from 1976-1997 and is currently the head coach at East St. Louis Senior High School. Fennoy has coached his teams to 17 Illinois state track and field championships and eight state runners-up. He has coached many of his athletes to individual state championships and national acclaim. The most notable are six-time Olympic and Gold Medalist, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and two-time Olympian and Gold Medalist Dawn Harper-Nelson. Fennoy has been named the National Coach of the Year twice and is a member of the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association, National High School Athletics Association, and St. Louis Sports Halls of Fame.
While his leadership and achievements on the field are impressive, the impacts he’s had off the field are even bigger. He is looked upon as a role model to his athletes, school, and community. He relies on his strong faith to religion and education to teach those around him to be even better than they already are. With more than 50 years of volunteer service, he’s made lasting impressions on almost everyone in his community.
“Coach Fennoy is the embodiment of what this award represents,” Rawlins said. “To have someone with outstanding morals and a long record of dedication to improving the lives of those around him is priceless. Shelter Insurance® is proud and honored to be able to tell Coach Fennoy thank you for everything he has done.”
Shelter Insurance® has presented the annual award, named after the company’s first president and chairman, since 1982 to people that have demonstrated excellence in one or more areas that include science, medical, research, health services, education, history, agriculture, athletics, or overall community service. Each recipient is nominated by a Shelter employee or agent. The winner is then chosen by the Board of Directors of Shelter’s charitable organization, the Shelter Insurance® Foundation. Each winner is also given a $2,500 award.

Powerhouse Community Development is providing Thanksgiving to the community. We will be distributing Thanksgiving Food Boxes with turkey; We are excited to step in and realize the great need and the great history behind this endeavor and we’re committed to ensuring the community is fed. We want to continue bringing the community together in memory of Ms. Almeta Crayton. We will strive to keep this legacy alive and ensure EVERYBODY EATS! Our community has benefited from Ms. Almeta’s passion for the Columbia area. Her desire to bring the community together continued through her Everybody Eats program, this will be the 25th year!! The meal will take place Thursday, November 24, 2022 at Columbia Activity Senior Center. We will be distributing the food boxes on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at PCDC at Parkade Plaza. We are taking food donations at PCDC as well.
