Support Columbia – Do Your part to keep the local economy open
The Chamber encourages face mask wearing for all able individuals, along with social distancing, frequent hand washing, and cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, as a way to control our community’s COVID-19 cases. By decreasing or controlling the number of positive COVID-19 cases, we can protect our businesses and community from further economic injury.
As business people, we know that when we don’t have a growing economy, businesses are forced to eliminate jobs or scale back employee hours. This then affects disposable income and money spent on goods and services. It quickly becomes a vicious cycle.
Keep Our Economy Open – Wear a Mask
Back in July, Goldman Sachs released an analysis stating that if the United States were to mandate that all Americans wear masks, it would save the country from deleterious economic lockdowns that would reduce the gross domestic product by 5%, or about $1 trillion.
Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization recommend cloth masks for the general public to wear in public places and when within six feet of another person who does not live in their household. The CDC recommends masks as a critical preventive measure and are most essential in times when social distancing is difficult. Cloth face coverings are most likely to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus when they are widely used by people in public settings.
How to Wear a Mask and Where to Find Them Locally
While no one will ever say they prefer to wear a mask, we all prefer to have our small and local businesses survive this pandemic. If your current mask isn’t comfortable or is too difficult to breathe through, consider other approved face covering options. Masks only work if we wear them, meaning that the best mask is a comfortable mask. Masks come in a variety of styles and sizes from almost every retailer.
We have provided a list of Chamber members here who are selling masks. If these businesses are sold out, most retailers in Columbia are selling some sort of masks. The Chamber also has additional reusable masks available in packs of five if needed. Please call the Chamber for more information.
Do Your part
We are not defenseless against COVID-19. By following the three W’s to ward off COVID-19: wearing a mask, washing your hands, and watching your distance, all methods recommended by the CDC, we can protect our economy and keep our community on the road to recovery.
While the Chamber cannot control when our economy will resume to levels we experienced prior to March 2020, we can help encourage and spotlight behaviors that will lead us in a productive direction. Thank you in advance for helping by doing your part to slow the spread.
